Measure A authorizes the removal of a Los Angeles County sheriff if they commit serious violations of the public trust — like breaking the law, stealing county funds, or obstructing investigations into deputy misconduct.
Yes on A would create common-sense checks and balances and hold future sheriffs accountable.
L.A. County has had many sheriffs who have broken the community’s trust through corruption and ignoring their deputies’ illegal acts of violence. One past sheriff was recently released from federal prison, after a conviction for obstructing an investigation into department misconduct. These issues go deeper than just one sheriff — it’s a deeply rooted problem, and it’s time for change. No matter who voters elect as sheriff in November, we need a process to ensure that no sheriff is above the law.
Investigations have uncovered over a dozen deputy gangs within the department, including the white supremacist Lynwood “Vikings,” the East L.A. “Banditos,” and the Compton “Executioners” with matching Nazi tattoos, who have harassed and abused county residents for decades. From one to the next, recent sheriffs have resisted meaningful action to stop deputy gang violence, even covering up the existence of deputy gangs, tolerating participation, and shielding deputies from discipline. Settlements related to deputy gangs have cost taxpayers at least $55 million.
Current Sheriff Villanueva has repeatedly violated the law, disobeyed court orders, ignored and sanctioned deputy gang violence, and broken department policy to prevent deputies who commit misconduct from being disciplined. The public needs a direct way to keep a sheriff who shows such contempt for the law and the safety of the public in check.
